Blindness prevention group exceeds target for vision test pledges

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness has exceeded its World Sight Day pledged goal of 5 million eye tests, the group announced on its website.

“We call on the industry to join us in helping to prioritize their own eye health and leaders to ensure eye care is accessible, inclusive and affordable for everyone, everywhere,” IAPB said.

CooperVision, as a global patron of IAPB, joined the organization’s leaders at the United Nations Oct. 11-12 to advocate for eye health screenings and services in schools around the world, the company said. company in a press release.

CooperVision also signed a letter from IAPB calling on the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special envoy on vision to help fulfill the global commitment to reach the 1.1 billion people with low vision who do not have access to eye care services.

CooperVision employees also held fundraisers to donate to Optometry Giving Sight, of which the company is a Global Platinum Partner.

Alcon has also supported World Sight Day efforts around the world.

Company associates have already performed vision screenings on more than 21,000 Fort Worth, Texas-area students this year and estimated another 5,000 would be screened between World Sight Day and Oct. 18, Alcon said in a press release.

On World Sight Day, Alcon hosted a Children’s Sight Awareness Workshop in Geneva. Additionally, Alcon India conducted vision screenings for 140 children from two orphanages.

Alcon is also hosting a Global Associate Photo Contest October 10-17 in honor of World Sight Day. The winner will receive $10,000 which they can donate to an eligible eye health organization of their choice.
